About Us & Committee

Ijen Trail Running is an annual trail running event in the Ijen Volcano area of Bondowoso, Indonesia. The race has been held since 2015 under the name Ijen Trail Running, and it is organized by PEMKAB BONDOWOSO.

Our vision is to promote trail running in the Ijen region and to share the unique volcanic landscapes of Mount Ijen, Gunung Merapi, and Gunung Raung with runners and the surrounding community.

Who Organizes the Race

Ijen Trail Running is organized by PEMKAB BONDOWOSO, the local government of Bondowoso. Working with the regency allows the race route to cover the protected mountain areas around Kawah Ijen, Gunung Merapi, and Gunung Raung, and to coordinate with local communities along the trails.

The event brings together government, race organizers, local communities, volunteers, and participants from the region and beyond in a single annual trail running event.

Ijen Trail Running is an annual trail running event set in the Ijen Volcano area of Bondowoso, Indonesia. The race has taken place since 2015 under the Ijen Trail Running name and is organized by the local district government of Bondowoso. Rather than a single-day road festival, it is built around the open volcanic highlands of the region, where runners move across wide, stark landscapes shaped by the Ijen Volcano, Gunung Merapi and Gunung Raung.

The stated vision of the event is to promote trail running in the Ijen region while sharing the unique volcanic scenery of Mount Ijen, Gunung Merapi and Gunung Raung with participants and the surrounding community. In practice this means bringing domestic and international runners into a relatively remote corner of East Java and giving local residents a reason to engage with the landscape on foot. The committee structure reflects a blend of government organization and community participation, with an organizing body, a committee and a volunteer presence working together across the race.

For runners, the appeal of Ijen Trail Running lies in the combination of altitude, varied trail surfaces and the striking visual character of the Ijen highlands. Courses in the area typically involve long climbs, exposed sections and changing terrain, so preparation focuses on endurance, hill strength and familiarity with running on loose volcanic ground. Registration and general enquiries are handled through the committee, and the site is designed as a straightforward reference point for route information, the race calendar and how the event is organized from year to year.

Race Committee

A race committee of organizers and event staff carries out the work behind each edition, from route preparation and participant services to results publication and supporting the volunteers who help on the mountain.

Blue Fire

The famous Blue Fire phenomenon is a natural spectacle of the Ijen crater. The blue glow at the bottom of the crater is caused by sulfur mining activities, and runners on the night trails pass through it as part of the course.
